Ingredients found in the Alpha Brain Nootropic

GPC Choline (GPC) - 100 mg
Based on the famous lecithin, GPC is basicaly a phospholipid metabolite who can be located in neuronal membranes. As opposed to less expensive types of Choline like the Choline Bitrartate, the GPC choline will be very well assimilated and quickly passes across the blood-brain barrier. When delivered it helps brain function and learning processes by immediately boosting the synthesis and release of acetylcholine. Good acetylcholine has been associated to memory, mental drive, focus, REM sleep states, and also the prevention of mental degradation just like in Alzheimers.

Huperzia Serrata (#(. 5% Huperzine A) - 50 mg
Also known as Northern Firmoss, the ingredient Huperzia Serrata is probably the most efficient organic acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. It is made up of the well researched alkaloid Huperzine A, that has been tested in a wide variety of clinical applications and proven to have positive results on brain function. Acetylcholinesterase (ACE) is in charge for the breakdown of Acetylcholine, therefore by inhibiting ACE, even more acetylcholine is accessible to the brain. Through the use of the full range Huperzia Serrata compared to Huperzine A, you additionally receive the advantages of Huperzine-B, and some other managing components of the entire natural herb. Vinpocetine - 5mg
Made from the periwinkle plant, vinpocetine can help deliver oxygen to the brain by boosting circulation and blood flow. Carefully studied in Europe, clinical research have found it to give several advantages for the human brain, such as memory improvement, greater cognitive performance, enhanced cerebral circulation and greater mental acuity and awareness. AC-11 - 350mg
AC-11® the exclusive compound licensed under contract from Optigenex Inc, is made from Uncaria Tomentosa, a plant found in the South American rainforest. After many scientific and clinical studies carried out by third party labs and university medical centers, AC-11® was shown to support the body’s organic ability to repair DNA.

Eventhough the precise mechanisms of action are being further looked into, the scientists believe that that when the body is exposed to stress impacting on the integrity of the DNA, AC-11® can help activate enzymes which are instrumental in the repair processes. This goes over and above other nutritional supplement by safeguarding the body from damage to its primary building blocks: The DNA.

Bacopa (20% Bacosides) - 500 mg
Bacopa monnieri consist of an Ayurvedic herb discovered in the marshlands of India best-known to improve clear thinking and also support memory function. Ayurvedic masters have suggested its cognitive enhancing effects for hundreds of years as Bacopa continues to be served to Raj’s and peasants as well. Clinical research demonstrate that it provides strong antioxidant properties, defends mental function in individuals with epilepsy who use the drug phenytion, not to mention animal models have revealed unequivocally that bacopa enhances learning skills.

Bacosides, the active substances in Bacopa, play a protective part in the synaptic functions of the nerves in the hippocampus, the seat of memory. Within the hippocampus nerve impulses are carried across the synapses and bacopa is assumed to help prevent the deterioration that impairs memory and cognition. Learn More on Bacopa

Pterostilbene - 250 mcg
Certainly one of the most popular extracts in the area of nootropics, pterostilbene is rapidly surpassing its near cousin resveratrol in level of popularity. An organic antioxidant found in large numbers in blueberries. Anecdotal proof suggests that this specific antioxidant is useful in getting rid of free radicals that give rise to ‘mental fog’. Along with the different antioxidants in the supplement, this brings additional protection and medical advantages to Alpha Brain.

Mucuna Pruriens (50% l-Dopa) - 200mg
Mucuna pruriens, often called velvet bean or cowhage is actually another Aryuvedic herb with an extensive history of traditional use for treatment of the brain. Like science later identified, mucuna is among the few plants to have high amounts of l Dopa, a precursor for the neurotransmitter dopamine. L dopa passes across the blood-brain barrier and turns into dopamine, an essential brain chemical associated with things such as mood, movement and sexuality. You can also find antioxidant properties that arepresently being analyzed in association with the prevention and treatment of Parkinson’s.

GABA - 300mg
GABA or gamma-aminobutyric acid, identified in 1950, is one of the most significant and wide-spread inhibitory neurotransmitter within the brain. Signs and symptoms of unbalanced excitation in the brain may include restlessness, insomnia, irritability and even seizures. By inhibiting too much excitability GABA is capable to induce relaxation, analgesia, as well as aid in sleep. Inside this formula, GABA plays an essential part in balancing out your mind, and making sure that the brain remains relaxed even if the "engines" are running hard. Learn More on GABA

Oat Straw (10: 1) - 300 mg
Oat straw is certainly one of natures most effective anxiolytics (anti-anxiety solutions) and continues to be prescribed for of a wide variety of nervous problems. It's also been proven to help with fatigue related neurological discomfort and is generally offered as a natural substitute to help combat Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD). The formula is extremely effective, in a 10: 1 concentration.

Vitamin B6 - 15 mg
Vitamin B6 or Pyridoxine, is among the body’s busiest vitamins, associated in over 101 chemical responses. Certainly one of the major responsibility is to help in the production of amino-acids & neurotransmitters. Examples of these neurotransmitters are serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and GABA. Without having Vitamin B6 a lot of of the processes occurring with the active ingredients in the supplement wouldn't be nearly as effective.

#1 Let's try this...jennyup 2011-09-17 11:01
I ordered 2 bottles even if I thought they were a bit pricey to begin with, and that was BEFORE I realized that the recommended dosage was more than 1 pill a day. Oh well. Hope it works.

I made the decision to try Alpha Brain after learning about them on the Joe Rogan Podcast a few weeks ago. Up until now I feel fine. I guess they give me a little more focus to get my stuff done. Nothing to intense, but I guess I just feel good using them.

What made me try AlphaBrain was whe the CEO of Onnit Labs was on Joe's podcast talking about AlphaBrain and his crazy spiritual experience to Peru. Sounds like a cool guy. So anyways I figured I would give it a try and see what it really does. To be honnest I really didn't need them whatsoever, but that was my way of giving back to Joe's Podcast, because I think he has something to do with Onnit Labs... Not sure if it's a partnetship or what.

So I honnestly say AlphaBrain seems to be working fine. It gives me a little more energy and focus. Makes a major impact when it's time to get things done. For me, it takes a few hours to kick in completely so be patient when you first give it a try.

I give it a 4 star.

#5 Worth the wait...Pattrum 2011-09-20 23:59
After 5 weeks, product finally arrives! I was expecting this because they sent me 2 or 3 emails saying they where shortshipping the product due to a large demand! So I was expecting somewhat of a delay... however waiting 5 weeks is too much if you ask me!

On a positive note, I tried it and it's not bad at all! I can say that when started using Alphabrain, I just felt more alert of what was going on aroud me. I was able to focus and carry conversations at anytime. I usually have a hard time with this. I'm at week 2 now so i'll keep using this for a while and see if I can maintin this feeling long term or if you just get used to it... like coffee for example.

#6 Works great!Jeff03 2011-11-12 13:29
Great product. Works like it says it would. Gives me clear thinking by removing that mental fog I would sometime get sitting in front of a computer too long.

My previous attempt in Nootropics was 5-Htp supplements only. Had some positive effects, but nothing like a good Alpha Brain blend like this one.

They have a pretty solid ingredient list.

#11 I have a question about Alpha BrainCharlesBudowski 2012-02-02 21:01
Are they more like Adderall, in which it immediately works after taking them for an extended time period. EX: You take your alpha brain and your cognitive functions are enhanced for 4-6 hours. Or are they more like fish oil/multi vitamins. Where consistent usage will overall improve your cognitive functions and the effects of them are around the clock.

Adderall is a mixture of amphetamines used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy, a sleep disorder. Amphetamines have a well-described role in altering the activity of neurotransmitte r dopamine. Amphetamines bind to inhibit the Dopamine Transporter (DAT), a protein that reuptakes dopamine from the synaptic cleft (the space between two communicating brain cells), and monoamine oxidase, an enzyme responsible for the breakdown of excitatory neurotransmitte rs. Inhibiting these enzymes directly boosts the amount of active neurotransmitte rs in areas of the brain responsible for attention, mood, and wakefulness.

The primary difference between medications like Adderall and nootropics like AlphaBRAIN is the absence of engineered pharmacological agents aimed at treating deficiencies. AlphaBRAIN ingredients are extracts that are all naturally occurring. The components enhance cognitive function through an increase in neurotransmitte r precursors (mucuna, GPC, GABA), providing neuroprotective molecules (pterostilbene, bacopa, AC-11, vinpocetine, oat straw, vitamin B6 ), and increasing available acetylcholine (huperzine A, bacopa, and GCP ).

Huperzine A is the only ingredient with a similar mechanism to Adderall. It increases acetylchoine (Ach) levels by inhibiting acetylcholinest erase, leaving more Ach in the synaptic cleft. Huperzine can be detected in the blood 5-7 minutes after ingestion, (less the time it takes for the capsule to dissolve) similar to the detection of amphetamines. Pharmokinetic studies of huperzine A report a beta half-life (time it takes for half of the substance to be eliminated) of 11.5 hours, similar to the 11.7 hour half life of Adderall. Therefore the effects of enzyme inhibition for huperzine A and Adderall follow a similar time course, yet they target different neurotransmitte r systems and will have impact on cognition. Overall, analysis of the mechanism of action lends evidence that AlphaBRAIN can provide immediate benefits to directly improve cognition as well as support neurological health with long term use.

Good question!

None of the ingredients in AlphaBRAIN fall under categories that are tested for in drug screens. Most work or federally mandated screens are 5 panel tests, also known as the NIDA-5 (www.drugabuse.gov) drug test. Those drugs include cannabinoids, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and PCP. If an individual fails on one (or more) of these screens, a confirmation test, usually GC-MS, can distinguish between similar drugs.

The NCAA is one of the more stringent drug testers in the country. They test a longer set of banned substances that include street drugs, anabolic agents, beta-blockers, peptide hormones, and anti-estrogens. A complete list can be viewed at the NCAA website. No ingredients in AlphaBRAIN, or any Onnit products for that matter, appear on this list. Therefore you should have no apprehension about passing a drug screen.

Good question. Neurons can often respond to excess simuli by down-regulating their receptors, which can lead to desensitization . Not all cholinergic neurons will respond the same however. Some neurons increase their density of post-synaptic receptors in response to heightened stimuli, strengthening synaptic connections. This is called LTP (long term potentiation) and is a critical mechanism underlying learning and memory.

A paper (Ye el. al, 2001) showed that huperzine A can enhance LTP in the hippocampus, an important brain structure for learning and memory. Another study (Laganire et. al, 1991) commented on a minimal to no development of tolerance to Huperzine A with long term use. One group (Fayuk et al, 2004) showed that huperzine had no effect on the amplitude or kinetics of the receptor's response, but showed a slowed rate of recovery from desensitization . Overall, the literature doesn't show many adverse effects or tolerance when increasing Ach with Huperzine.

Fish oil supplements contain poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as omega-3 and omega-6. The positive effects on cognition with fish oil supplements include increased attention and elevated mood. PUFAs can be incorporated into the cell membrane to provide fluidity and can be metabolized for cellular processes, such as neurotransmitte r synthesis. Animal studies show increased acetylcholine in the hippocampus after DHA(present in fish oil) supplement (Minami el al. 1997) and this is hypothesis behind the positive effects in humans.

Alpha-GPC has a similar mechanism of elevating Ach. It is a lipid metabolite that can be used as a neurotransmitte r precursor by cholinergic neurons. Fish oil supplements have proven physiological benefits outside of cognition and might be a good addition to a nootropic.
